Travelling at Christmas with children - what do you need to know?

13.03.2023

Christmas is a time for getting together with our loved ones. Many people travel to visit their parents, grandparents or other relatives over the festive period. If you are travelling with children, it is a good idea to prepare well for such a trip. What do you need to know? We’ve got a handful of tips for you below.

Travelling at Christmas with children in your own car

Your own car is the most convenient means of transport. It makes you fully independent. It is up to you to decide when to start the journey and how long it will take (of course, taking into account objective factors such as the length of the route, road conditions). But you need to ensure that the journey runs smoothly and is comfortable for all the passengers.

  • Before leaving, check the technical condition of the vehicle and the level of fluids. In winter, especially in the mountains, roads can be icy, so chains on the wheels are a must.
  • You should also ensure you have safety-certified, comfortable seats for toddlers. Safety first.
  • Plan the route in advance, especially if it is lengthy. You cannot forget to take into account some pit stops, which your children may be asking for. Also take some healthy snacks and drinks with you. Children can get bored when travelling so it's a good idea to have some films on a tablet or audio books with stories at the ready.

Travelling for Christmas with children by train

The train is a great alternative to the car, especially if you are going to another city. When planning a train journey, check the timetable and be at the platform a few minutes early. The train will not wait for you, so it is worth checking in advance exactly what time it will leave and from which platform. Also check public transport links or availability of taxis at the destination.
It is best to opt for travel in the morning, a day or two before Christmas Eve, when it is less crowded. Buying tickets in advance with seat reservations is the best solution.
Although the trains are very well-maintained and offer a range of facilities for parents with children, remember a few rules. Take care to maintain hygiene and order. Wet wipes and ordinary tissues are a must. Do not forget story books and colouring books for your child so that they don't get bored on the journey. Cartoons on a tablet should also help effectively kill time.

Travelling at Christmas with children by plane

When travelling to another country, the best means of transport will be by plane. Most airlines offer free flights for children under two years old. You have to pay for a seat for older children. As with travel by any public means of transport, be punctual and ensure that the child is not bored both while waiting for the plane and during the flight itself.
